Kathy Brown

Glitterbox recently unveiled ‘Legacy’, an LP celebrating Kathy Brown as possibly one of house music’s most prolific and accomplished vocalists, with label profits from the record going towards her healthcare fund. An album launch party event will take place at Defected HQ, 6-11pm on Thursday, 18 July, which is set to be live streamed, to raise money for Kathy’s chosen charity - Macmillan Cancer Support. The line-up will feature Glitterbox favourites Katie Goodman, Sophie Lloyd, Michael Gray, Seamus Haji and Melvo Baptiste.

Seamus Haji, A&R Manager: “When we found out that Kathy had stage four cancer, she told us that she had never had an album out before and that she’d love to have a body of work in one place. So, we set about collating some of her strongest releases, including four new exclusive remixes from fans of her work including DJ Spen, Michael Gray, Sophie Lloyd and Moplen. I’m excited about this Glitterbox release for one of the fiercest house divas of our time.”

Tickets are currently available via Resident Advisor, with proceeds going to charity, with RA kindly waiving all ticketing costs for the event.

As well as the album, a new line of t-shirts featuring Kathy’s image, created with Glitterbox designer Mark Wardel, are available now on DStore. The profits from the sale of these will also raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. To support the release, Glitterbox will host a radio special for Kathy tomorrow, Wednesday 10 July.

Seamus Haji: “I’ve known and worked with Kathy since the mid-90s from performing in clubs together, as A&R at Defected, and more recently on my singles ‘A Better Place’ and ‘Dance With Me’ on my Big Love label. I’ve always admired Kathy, from seeing her tear it up live in the clubs to her studio work; I love her positive attitude and it’s a joy to work with her.”

The 19-track compilation features four new remixes and edits. DJ Spen adds his style to ‘Get Another Love’ - Kathy’s noughties take on the ‘70s hit from Chantal Curtis. ‘Give It Up’ from the Soulfuric trio of Tappert, Knight and Pomeroy as Eminence is given a spin by Moplen.

The sampler features her chart-topping collaboration with British production duo Soul Central ‘Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own)’, first released on Defected, remixed by close label friend Michael Gray.

Next, Sophie Lloyd also reworks Warren Clarke’s ‘Over You’, with Sophie and her co-writer Darren Morris adding gospel-fuelled piano hooks and live bass.

Kathy Brown’s ‘Legacy’ LP is out 19 July 2024 via Glitterbox Recordings.
