In the late 60s, a young experimental performer formed a new band after he moved back to London in the psychedelic era. The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown saw singer Arthur take to the stage in flamboyant costumes, freaky make-up and an ornamental helmet on his head that burned with real fire. This was especially poignant when the band performed ‘Fire’, a single that would shoot to the top of the charts in the UK, Canada and the USA when released to an unsuspecting public in 1968.
“I am the God of Hellfire, and I bring you… Fire!” sang Arthur at the start of ‘Fire’, and his performance of the song on UK TV show Top Of The Pops, complete with burning helmet, could possibly be of the most iconic and out-there No.1 performances of all time.
Fifty-five years later, a young experimental producer named Luca recorded a tech-house track with his rapper pal, WasionKey. Sensing it needed a sample to lift it, he reached for a snippet of ‘Fire’ and reached out to Brown himself on social media, to see what he thought of it. Brown, sensing the enthusiasm and ambition of Luca, not only granted clearance for the ‘Fire’ sample to Luca’s ‘New Spice’ track, but began to mentor Luca and take him on tour with him to play decks and keys.
‘New Spice (Fire)’ is now on Jack Said What, complete with a big room remix by dharkfunkh.
