As one of Haçienda’s female DJs, DJ Paulette rose to the heights of the music industry with performances across the globe. Welcome To The Club, her debut book, is the first historical account of the electronic dance scene written by a black woman DJ in which Paulette shares the highs, lows and love of a life lived through music.
She makes observations about the evolution of the industry, shining a light on and celebrating the work of her peers, the unsung and often invisible sheroes who have possibly shaped the industry in their own way, making a contribution to the culture and within this male dominated creative space.
In this, her self-penned debut, she offers a candid account from the unique perspective of a black woman navigating a fun and glamorous world that is also riddled with exclusion, misogyny, racism, and classism. She combines memoirs, interviews, self-help, education, history, a sense of purpose and her love of music with humour and honesty. Part biography, part call to action, the book is not just a story but also a manifesto for our times.
DJ Paulette celebrates the launch of this book with two special events.
The first is on 25 Jan at HOME in Manchester, in conversation with fellow DJ, label head and BBC Radio 6 host Jamz Supernova, who was recently bestowed the Music Champion award at Music Week’s Women In Music Awards 2023. The session runs from 7pm - 9pm with time allowed for audience questions and book signing.
Then on 26 Jan in London, she will celebrate in conversation with Jacqueline Springer, Curator Africa & Diaspora: Performance at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Jacqueline is also seasoned journalist, TV, and radio broadcaster.
The interview will be followed with a special performance by DJ Paulette and Marcia Carr (DJ). This is an exclusive event for Soho House members and invited guests only.
Further events around the UK will be announced soon.
