Do believe the hype. It’s not often you can say that about a brand but the Glitterbox phenomenon is the hottest thing in global clubbing right now. Created in 2015 by Defected Records’ main man, Simon Dunmore, it’s good-time clubbing for all ages and persuasions and in a world which seems to be full of bitterness and hatred right now, it’s a special place where people can go and leave all troubles at the front door.
In addition to its weekly club night in Ibiza over the summer season, Glitterbox takes its parties around the world, and with a recent sold out southern hemisphere tour and selling out the 5000 capacity Printworks in London, the clubbing juggernaut landed at Galvanizers, SWG3 in Glasgow last night as part of its Work Your Body Tour.
On the line up were Joey Negro, DJ Spen, Simon Dunmore, The Shapeshifters, Hifi Sean, Melvo Baptiste and Natasha Kitty Katt for a six-hour party running from 8pm through to 2am on the Sunday morning. This was the Scottish debut for the brand and, promoted by the successful team behind Colours in Scotland, it was no surprise that the event had sold out in advance.
We arrived to hear the tail end of Natasha’s set, before enjoying the vibes of Simon Dunmore, who played house remixes mixed with disco originals, the musical philosophy of the brand – it’s 2019 clubbing with huge 70s disco influences and it works so, so well.
Glasgow had turned out in force for the party and it was a who’s who of clubbers and promoters of all ages, all there to enjoy one of the biggest nights the city’s had in a long time. All rooms were rammed and after enjoying the set from Joey Negro, we spent the end of the night switching between the two main rooms as DJ Spen went head to head with The Shapeshifters. Both were absolutely rockin’ it and we eventually found ourselves on the stage as Shapeshifters’ Simon Marlin dropped ‘Lola’s Theme’ as his second last tune of the night, complimented by smoke, huge balloons, dancers and glitter cannons.
An amazing ending to a spectacular night and although we’re rough as heck today, it was so worth it. If you’ve still to try a Glitterbox party, make sure you do it soon, you will not be disappointed.
