Premiered by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 while still on white label, and then signed to Positiva/Virgin EMI, Ten Ven’s ‘Just About’ has apparently grown into a formidable club anthem over the past few months. While Ten Ven’s original continues to rack up radio and streaming plays, including MistaJam’s Current Anthem at Radio 1, 10x Radio 1 plays, and a Music Week Club Chart No.1, Positiva has revealed a remix from the UK’s Kideko. Available now, the Brighton-based artist injects ‘Just About’ with a shot of South Coast funk.
An uplifting disco house jam, ‘Just About’ is the work of Ten Ven (aka Tom Neville), who introduced elements of house and electronic music to Dua Lipa’s sound. The British producer, still anonymous at the time, first stepped out of the underground to produce two tracks (and work on several more) on Dua Lipa’s eponymous debut album back in 2017. Sporting similar crossover appeal, ‘Just About’ – with its earworm vocal, fluttering synthlines, and retro piano hook – blends classic and contemporary house tropes with a bassline that possibly projects ‘summer anthem’.
Major support for Ten Ven’s productions (Honshu Wolf EP, ‘Turn It Up’), has come from Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Pete Tong, and DJ Target, along with Solomun, Sasha, Skream, Gorgon City, Camelphat, Joris Voorn, Monki, Groove Armada, MJ Cole, Mixmag, Clash, Red Bull UK, Dancing Astronaut, and more.
With influences ranging from Chicago house and French disco, to electro and beyond, Neville first made a name for himself – at least under this guise – with releases on labels such as Greco-Roman, Noir, Partyfine, MTA, Weapons, Shadow Child’s Food, and his own imprint, When I Met You. Ten Ven’s last single ‘Otic’, a collaboration with Alex Metric, was released via Anjunadeep and hit No.1 on the Cool Cuts chart; and the pair’s follow-up, ‘Transmission 1 EP’, is already a key part of Solomun’s current DJ sets.
