Not without good reason is the motto of this year's Cocoon Ibiza season "Into the Magic", as the sun-drenched Balearic island is steeped in a special enchantment. So, with great enthusiasm, the team around Sven Väth are applying themselves to the 13th season in Ibiza, and you don't have to be a prophet to predict some historic club nights ahead at Amnesia. As is the annual custom, at least since 2007, Cocoon lay the way for this season with their Cocoon Ibiza Summer Mix CD, this time featuring mixes from two of the year’s DJ highlights Joris Voorn & Cassy.
An open artistic approach is what Rotterdam-born DJ and producer Joris Voorn shows on his mix for this new compilation. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Voorn has stood for an inspiring alliance between European club traditions and the aesthetics of Detroit techno, and thus won the hearts of Technasia, Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier and Sven Väth. His mix elaborately intertwines a total of 30 tracks by, among others, such well-known producers/remixers as Oxia, John Tejada, Guy Gerber, Samuel L. Session and Radio Slave. In his own inimitable way he delivers a complex yet seamless mix that illustrates the aesthetic bandwidth and deepness of modern electronic dance music perfectly. Constantly altering the tension, Voorn draws the line from Lawrence's melancholic and emotional sound sketches (‘The Swan’) to Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge's ‘Für die Liebe’ via the sensual-percussive Dub House of Microtrauma's ‘Pollenflug’ and the groove-accented ‘Acid Jam’ by Rhauder. Right up to the epic finale featuring the tropically-dense cover version of the Derrick May classic ‘Strings Of Life’ by the British producer Astro Fram aka Soul Mekanik, this is a mix that keeps you drawn in and gasping for more.
On disc 2 it’s the turn of Catherine Britton aka Cassy, a key players at this year’s Cocoon Ibiza, who will be playing both the opening and closing parties. For more than ten years now, the multi-national Berlin resident has been an essential part of the global tech house scene and looks back on numerous releases for the likes of Perlon, Ostgut Ton, Playhouse as well as her own label Cassy. Her DJ style is characterized by an intensive and groove-accented mixture of reduced rhythmic elements with an intuition for warm and sensual soul, which has led to her residencies at Berlin's Panoramabar, the Rex Club in Paris and the Trouw in Amsterdam, and excited the audiences on her 2009 Cocoon mix CD ‘Simply Devotion’. In her current set, Cassy dives deep into the magic of Dub House: with a deep delay wonderland, ‘Kaimanawa’ by the Swiss Cavalier aka Agnes sets a distinctive exclamation mark right at the start of the mix, while the percussive ‘Put That Record Back On’ by DJ Dan remixed by Peace Division remains committed to the traditions of US Housetrax and ‘Cortometraggio’ by Alfredo Caforio and Gianni Sabato aka Rush? applies a very literal sense to the name of the French label Bass Culture. Apropos Bass Culture: Cassy's favourite producer at the moment, Mr. G (former member of The Advent), embellishes the track list with three jewels: with tropical House deepness (‘New Dayz’), the Kasper remix of ‘Sunday Blues’ and at the end of the mix with tribal Subsonic Jazz (‘Lex’).
