Gavin Herlihy follows up his well-received releases for Culprit and Crosstown Rebels with the ʻGet Looseʼ EP for Leftroom this March – a four-track release featuring No Regular Play on remix duties. Since leaving his employment as a respected music journalist, Herlihy has ploughed unnerving amounts of effort into his production career and combined with a talent when it comes to musical perversion, the results have been good. Cadenza, Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels and Moodmusic are just some of the labels that have bought into the Irishmanʼs distinct sound and the steady stream of quality isnʼt about to let up.
One of the hallmarks of Gavin Herlihyʼs productions is a deft touch when it comes to updating classic tropes and itʼs a skill that is hugely apparent across the ʻGet Looseʼ EP. The title track draws on many elements of the early-90s rave and updates them - making nagging vocal hits, moody synths and a bulbous, walking bassline sound as fresh and exciting as they did way back. No Regular Playʼs stripped, crisp version of ʻGet Looseʼ takes an electro view of the originalʼs elements and makes for a funk-laced creeper of a cut that brutally chops and changes moods to joyful effect. ʻLooking For The Same Thingʼ and ʻCʼMon Peopleʼ continue the looking back to look forward theme of the EP. The former, taking pleasure in offsetting skipping drums and funk licks with the woozy warmth of eye-closing synths while the latter manages to fuse broken nu-jazz, Nu-Yorican house and Detroit melodies without skipping a beat.
